Spec-First Selling Is Winning Local Advertising. Here's What 50+ Media Companies Already Know

Last spring, a media rep jumped on a call and shared a completed 30-second spec video with the owner of a local feed store. The rep had built the video just that morning, and the store's own aisles appeared right there in the frame. The feed store owner signed before the call was even over, and committed three times what he'd ever spent on a campaign.

A year ago, that was the story a rep told maybe once a quarter. In the first half of 2026, for hundreds of AEs, it turned into the norm.

We went through more than 400 success stories logged by account teams at the media companies that run on Waymark — broadcast, cable, and streaming sellers across roughly 300 local markets — and tallied the results.

Those wins influenced over $5.9M in advertiser ad spend, and 79% of the sellers said the video helped them close faster or save time. What they have in common is specific enough to copy in H2 and beyond.

How the Best Media Reps Use Spec Creative in H1 2026

Spec video didn't live in one singular part of the sales cycle.

Across 400+ wins, reps put Waymark videos to work everywhere — opening cold outreach, warming up a demo, sweetening a proposal, even onboarding a client after the sale.

Two moves came up again and again, though, and they're worth stealing: leading with a finished spot before a meeting exists, and walking into the pitch with one already built.

Here's how each played out.

Leading with Spec Video During Outreach

We've found that the sharpest sellers lead with creative in the very first touch, before a meeting is ever on the calendar.

In fact, about one in seven of the wins we reviewed traced back to a spec spot used during initial outreach. Spots were being dropped into a first email, a LinkedIn message, or an opening note to a prospect who hadn't even agreed to an intro call yet.

One rep couldn't get a dealership to take a meeting, so rather than send another "just following up" email, they attached a link to a finished Waymark spec video built for that specific dealership.

The dealership viewed the spot, but stayed silent. The rep waited. Weeks later, the prospect went back and watched it a second time, then reached out on their own.

That reply became a full needs analysis and pitch.

A link to a personalized, ready-to-air spot gives a cold prospect a reason to click and a reason to reply, which is more than a calendar request ever earns.

1 in 7 wins traced back to a spec spot being included in the seller's initial outreach.

Speed Is the Sales Lever in Local Advertising

The second major pattern observed among the best sellers is clock speed.

Reps who turned a spot around in 24 to 48 hours (and sometimes live on the call in minutes) kept beating the two-to-three-week wait that traditional production requires. And in local media, that gap is often the whole game.

Picture the advertisers already on your list: there's that dentist that needs a spot on air this week, the local roofer eager to aid the community after a storm, the dealership running a weekend blowout.

For them, the alternative to a fast ad isn’t a slow ad, it’s no ad at all. They'd miss their ideal window.

Remember that feed store deal from earlier? That deal closed in one sitting for an unglamorous reason: the creative existed while the owner was still excited about it.

How are sellers producing spec spots so fast?

AI generated the first draft in more than half the wins we reviewed, and because the reps use Waymark, the brand's own assets are built in from the start.

Waymark starts from the advertiser's own website, automatically pulling their photos, footage, brand colors, tone, and logo and assembling them into a finished spec spot in minutes.

The first draft already looks like the client's business instead of a stock template, and from there the rep can fine-tune whatever they want: rework the script, swap a shot, change the voiceover.

One of our favorite examples from H1 this year involved a premium wellness clinic in Colorado Springs. The owner was stuck weighing a seasonal package when their AE sent them a Waymark-generated spec spot. Seeing an example using their own brand was enough for the client to agree, and the campaign was on air within two days.

Where Spec Video Wins: The Top Verticals in Local Advertising

We noticed that the most wins in H1 bunch up wherever good creative used to be slow, pricey, or simply unavailable.

Ranked by ad spend influenced, home and property services led at roughly $1M. Those are the HVAC companies, roofers, and remodelers who almost never keep a production team on staff.

Events and seasonal advertisers logged the most overall wins by sheer count, a positive side effect of the the familiar "we need it on air now" rush.

Another number we looked into was average deal size. Auto advertisers came in highest at about $42K per deal, despite a lower number of overall wins. We take that as a sign that when the purchase is big and the buyer is deliberating, a finished spot not only closes the deal, it actually earns a larger one.

Healthcare and wellness told the same story. There were fewer deals, bigger commitments, and creative that has to look credible or it doesn't work at all.

The Shift Every Media Sales Team Should Make in H2

Spec video has its place in every stage of the media sales funnel, but if you only commit to making one change before Q4 planning, let it be this: introduce spec video into your outreach efforts and first conversations with prospects instead of holding it for the close.

The reps winning in local advertising right now show up with something finished, turn it around fast, and make it feel custom. The revenue is trailing them into net-new accounts, streaming budgets, and the high-ticket verticals that were always too slow to serve well.

We learned a lot from the success stories of Waymark users all over the world in H1 2026. We put the full breakdown including the vertical leaderboard, what we noticed about the anatomy of a winning spot, and the plays behind these wins — into The State of Spec Video: H1 2026.
